The eXe is a open source authoring tool. The eXe stands for eLearning XHTML <span />editor.eXe is very user friendly which assist the teachers and academics to develop e-content without getting help from web designers or web software like HTML or XML markup. The content developed by eXe will be in e-content standards which can be exported in IMS Content Package, SCORM 1.2, or IMS Common Cartridge formats or as simple self-contained web pages.

The 1.04.1 version of eXeLearning for Mac is available as a free download on our website. The application lies within System Tools, more precisely CD & DVD Software. The most popular version of the program is 1.0.

Initially eXe project supported by New Zealand Government Tertiary Education Commission's eCollaboration Fund and was led by the University of Auckland, The Auckland University of Technology, and Tairawhiti Polytechnic. It was later supported by CORE Education, a New Zealand-based not-for-profit educational research and development organization. eXe was rated Best for 'Content Authoring' in IMS Global Learning Impact Awards 2008. There are now several projects developed by using eXe around the world.

Many content management and learning management systems do not provide WYSIWYG environment where authors can see what their content will look like in a browser. eXe enables WYSIWYG functionality to see what the content will look like when published online.

Features of ExeLearning tool:

'Overview With the eXe', users can develop a learning structure that suits their content delivery needs and build a resource that is flexible and easily updated. The Outline pane of the eXe Control Panel enables users to design an outline that reflects their own preferred hierarchical structure and taxonomy, i.e. topics-sections-units, or books-chapters-verses, etc. This can be established at the outset or can develop as the resource is built. The iDevice (instructional device) pane consists of a collection of structural elements that describe learning content. Some of these include, objectives, pre-knowledge, case studies, free text. Learning content is compiled by selecting iDevices from the iDevice menu and entering your learning content. A learning resource may consist of as few or as many iDevices as required to deliver the learning content effectively. New iDevices are in development and recommendations for additional iDevices are being sought from the wider learning community. An iDevice editor enabling users to design their own iDevices and templates has been released in an experimental format as work continues on its development. eXe offers the ability for users to customise their published content by selecting from a range of graphical style sheets. eXe’s Export facility allows content to be packaged in two ways. Learning resources can be packaged as a self contained web site for publishing to a web server, or as a SCORM Content Package which will enable the resource to be imported into any SCORM enabled learning management system (LMS).

eXeLearning is a free / libre software tool under GPL-2 that can be used to create educational interactive web content.[2]

eXeLearning can generate interactive contents in XHTML or HTML5 format. It allows you to create easily navigable web pages including text, images, interactive activities, image galleries or multimedia clips.

eXeLearning, available for Linux, Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X,[3] allows you to create or develop accessible contents in XHTML or HTML5 format, to generate complete websites (navigable web pages), to include interactive contents (different types of questions and activities) in each page, to export the contents in different formats such as ePub3 (an open standard for e-books),IMS or SCORM (educational standards used to publish interactive contents in platforms or elearning tools as Moodle or any other OER (Open Educational Resources) repositories or XLIFF (standard for translation). To classify, or to catalog, educational contents according to different metadata models: Dublin Core, LOM, LOM-ES.When exported as Web Site, we can create web pages that can be viewed in different digital devices (smartphones, tablets, laptops....)And all this stuff, and much more, without knowing anything about programming.

History[edit]

Music Download For Mac

eXeLearning was originally developed in New Zealand, in 2007, and was led by two universities (University of Auckland and Auckland University of Technology) and the Tairawhiti Polytechnic Institute. The project was originally supported by the New Zealand government, and it was later supported by many other institutions.[4]

The original project remained active until 2010. At that time eXeLearning had thousands of users and it was a very well known authoring tool in educational environments.

In 2009-2010, the Instituto de Tecnologías Educativas del Ministerio de Educación del Gobierno de España (now INTEF[5]) decided to restart and to evolve the project. The new eXeLearning, as it was named, would keep alive the original open source spirit of the project, adapting the application to new web developments and standards and introducing major improvements.

A new eXeLearning website was developed, a site that allows the users to actively participate in the project: make contributions, suggestions, find answers to different questions....

Now the project is, again, alive and kicking, and it is supported by different government agencies and companies, both in Spain and in other countries all over the world. As it can be seen with the recent release, last September, of eXeLearning 2.0.

eXeLearning previous release[edit]

In 2013 eXeLearning evolved as a web development, web application or tool, (written in Python + Ext JS) that can be used with the default or preferred browser of the user, capable to work, or to be executed, in different browsers.[6][7]

Since then, the new eXeLearning has experienced major advances:

  • Improvements in accessibility and presentation of contents.
  • Replacement of the internal format used in eXe: the original version used a closed binary format and it has been changed to an open XML format.
  • New option to export in XLIFF format to facilitate the translation of contents.
  • Development of a command line version (exe_do) to facilitate the publishing and maintenance of contents through scripts.
  • The Ability to generate editable SCORM packages with the tool itself.

eXeLearning 2.0 & 2.1[edit]

However, the innovations included in the new release are the main reasons that let the development team to move forward from version 1 to version 2.[8]

Configuration[edit]

  • Language management: we can work with eXeLearning in one language and generate content in another.
  • It lets you choose the browser to work with.
  • Advanced options:
    • You can choose the type of document: XHTML or (the greatest improvement) HTML5.
    • You can choose the level of tolerance of the text editor: Strict mode only allows XHTML or valid HTML5, Permissive mode allows us to enter any code.

iDevices[edit]

iDevices are the tools or blocks that can be included in our pages.

eXeLearning 2.0 significantly improves its level of accessibility. Now it is much easier to generate accessible contents.User experience has also improved: now the iDevices are grouped by categories and it is easier to select them. We can also hide those who do not wish to use or show less common iDevices that can be interesting for us.Improvements in iDevices such as Image Gallery or Image Magnifier and proprietary solutions and / or Flash based are replaced.New iDevices are included.

JavaScript and Styles[edit]

  • jQuery is included in all contents generated.
  • Import and export of Styles allowed.
  • Responsive design. Now you can find Styles that can fit any device (smartphones, tablets, laptops....).
  • Styles let you include JavaScript and customized HTML code.
  • Some Styles let you hide Menu or minimize iDevices.[9]

Application handling[edit]

Preview option: now you don't need to export to see the content edited so far.

Text editor[edit]

Downloader For Mac

  • Layout by columns (tableless).
  • New video and audio formats: mp4, ogv/ogg, webm, mp3, ogg, wav.
  • The attribution and licensing is provided with the new option that allows users to add information in headers and footers of images, videos and audios.
  • It is possible to use the Lightbox effect from the editor itself using the 'rel' attribute in links.
  • Now it is possible to export in two new formats:
    • SCORM 2004 (educational standard)
    • ePub3 (e-books standard)[10]

Roadmap[edit]

The future of eXeLearning involves the incorporation of new iDevices and Styles, including a tool for editing in real time, the replacement of all the fragments of code that are not compatible with the GPL-2 license, improvements in the import of content generated by other tools, and to become a genuine web service connected with different platforms.[11]
